SUMMARY:1500th Sounding of Daily Taps at The National WWI Memorial Washington DC
DESCRIPTION:The Doughboy Foundation will commemorate 1\,500 consecutive soundings of Daily Taps on Wednesday\, July 2\, 20025. \nEvery day without fail\, at 5 pm Eastern\, Taps sounds at the National World War I Memorial in honor of our nation’s heroes. This solemn tradition honors the 4.7 million Americans who served in World War I\, while also paying tribute to all veterans from every branch of service and all wars. This program began on Monday\, May 24\, 2021\, and has continued unbroken despite rain\, snow\, cold\, or heat in Washington. \nThis program was inspired by the nightly sounding of The Last Post at the Menin Gate in Ypers\, Belgium and at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra\, Australia. The National WWI Memorial in Washington is the only location in the United States where Taps is sounded on a daily basis by a live performer. \nEach day\, a bugler\, dressed in a WWI uniform\, sounds the 24-note call by the flagpole. \nSince the completion of the Memorial\, Daily Taps has become a powerful symbol of remembrance and gratitude. This daily performance has featured some of the most celebrated musicians in the nation\, including 10-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Arturo Sandoval\, as well as members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra\, National Symphony Orchestra\, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra\, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. These esteemed artists have lent their talents to ensure the sacrifices of veterans are never forgotten. \n“Daily Taps is a profound reminder of the courage\, sacrifice\, and service of those who defended freedom during World War I and beyond.  This tradition connects the past to the present and ensures that their legacy lives on.” -Jari Villanueva\, Executive Director\, The Doughboy Foundation \nRSVP for the 1500th TapsThe ceremony is free and open to the public.\nIf you can’t attend in person\, watch our live stream at:\nwww.youtube.com/@DoughboyFoundation \nYour support for the Doughboy Foundation will help fund our mission in perpetuity\, inspiring future generations of visitors and forever honoring our World War I veterans and all U.S. servicemen and women. SUMMARY:"The Story of a Rose" A Musical Reverie on the Great War
DESCRIPTION:The Doughboy Foundation presents “The Story of a Rose- A Musical Reverie on the Great War” conceived and performed by Broadway star Melissa Errico.Get TicketsRachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center\n4915 Campus Dr E\, Alexandria\, VA 22311\n \nMusic Director Tedd Firth\n Directed by Lisa Shriver\nAssociate script supervisor: David Rigano \nDiscounts are available to military\, veterans\, first responders\, students\, and seniors \nGet TicketsIn a unique mix of beautiful song and brilliant speech\, the inimitable actress and author Melissa Errico relates the story of the too-often-overlooked epoch of World War One\, in all its many-sided American complexity\, in an original musical presentation produced by The Doughboy Foundation. A sparkling\, orchestral one-woman concert with evocative visuals\, ravishing period costumes\, and an all-star jazz ensemble\, “The Story of a Rose” is both stylish entertainment and a deep reflection on a war we must not forget. As ever\, Melissa’s touch will be intelligent and sensual\, as she narrates her subject with the deep resonance of a mother of three teenagers\, the same age today as the soldiers whose lives she sings. \nFrom the arrival of Italian and Jewish immigrants before the war to the birth of distinctly American song during it\, from the flight from Europe in the ‘oughts’’ of the twentieth century to the return of American soldiers to Europe in the teens — from the nascent glories of Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern to the great Harlem Hellfighters and their introduction of American jazz to France right on the battlefields of the Western Front – every face of the Great War\, the people who lived through it\, and\, above all\, the music that they sang \, will come alive. Using her own great Aunt Rose as her avatar\, and the Ziegfeld Follies that Rose starred in as a frame\, Melissa recreates the songs and hopes and loves of the people of the time. \nUnder the musical direction of the great jazz pianist Tedd Firth and his big-band period ensemble\, Melissa will share wartime tunes of patriotism and protest\,loss and longing\, from “Oh\, How I Hate To Get Up In The Morning!” to “I Didn’t Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier”\, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” to a soaring “They Didn’t Believe Me\,” all ending in a rousing chorus of “God Bless America” – a song Berlin wrote for the First World War. Acclaimed Broadway actor/musician George Abud assists in a variety of onstage roles. \nThroughout\, Melissa tell us the story of her Rose\, her Aunt—a story of a family legend \, by turns mischievous and melancholy\,  that becomes the story of a lost time. “Music”\, she declares affirmatively\, “is the one force that can connect our private memories to our common history. Every time we sing their songs\, the people of a lost time live again.” “The Story Of A Rose” will make the stage ring with history\, and with hope. \nWatch a short preview of the show\nSorry\, your browser doesn't support embedded videos. You can share this video by sending this YouTube Link https://youtu.be/tg56t-nLOhI?si=AGY1CnvCnS-Qx0ri \nAbout the Doughboy FoundationThe Doughboy Foundation\, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization\, supports and encourages planning and execution of programs\, projects\, and activities commemorating and educating the public on America’s role in World War I\, “The War that Changed the World.” The Foundation encourages private & educational organizations\, Federal\, State\, and local governments\, and all individual Americans to Keep Faith with the American Doughboys and every American who served in World War I. The Foundation’s three-fold mission: Commemorate the experience of those Americans who served; Honor the 4.7 million Americans who put on the uniform to answer the call of their country; Inspire 21st-century Americans and all future generations to learn about\, remember\, and understand how WWI transformed our country and the world. The Doughboy Foundation has worked in partnership with the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission to build the new National World War I Memorial in Washington\, D.C. Following the September 30 sunsetting of the Centennial Commission\, the Doughboy Foundation continues its mission of stewardship for the National World War I Memorial\, and the remembrance of all\nthose who served and sacrificed in World War I. \nAbout Melissa ErricoActress\, recording artist and author Melissa Errico has been called\, at her Carnegie Hall debut in 2022\, “a unique force in the life of the New York theater– there’s no on one quite like her!” A Tony-nominated actress for her mentor Michel Legrand’s “Amour” on Broadway – and star of such Broadway musicals as “My Fair Lady”\, “High Society”\, “White Christmas”\, “Les Miserables” & more— she has come into her distinct own in recent years with concerts and cabarets touring the world that spin together vital and witty talk with the sublime singing that had Opera News dub her “The Maria Callas of the American musical theater.” \nStephen Sondheim and Legrand\, among others\, have been the subjects of her solo concerts – her 2019 album “Sondheim Sublime” was called\, by the Wall Street Journal\, “The finest solo Sondheim album ever recorded” . But she has also recently appeared asMrs. Patrick Campbell in the play “Dear Liar” at the Irish Rep and premiered the role of Eleanor of Aquitaine last fall in an unforgettable concert at the Metropolitan Museum’s Cloisters\, singing a new David Shire/Adam Gopnik musical penned for her. In addition\, she writes regularly about the comic twists and turns in the life of a performer for The New York Times\, in a series dubbed by the newspaper “Scenes From An Acting Life.” From Paris\, where she appeared last summer with her frequent concert mate Isabelle Georges at the Bal Blomet\, to London\, where she is a regular at Crazy Coqs cabaret – from the Elysée Palace to the stages of Cadogan Hall\, Montreal Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall – she brings her inimitable mind\, spirit\, voice and soul to audiences around the world. \nAbout Tedd Firth\nTedd Firth is a New York City based musical director\, jazz pianist and arranger. Gate at Green-Wood Cemetery to Grace’s grave.  At the gravesite\, there will be a ceremony to dedicate the marker\, including the unveiling of the stone\, remarks from speakers\, military honors\, and a wreath laying.  Following the ceremony\, there will be a light reception at the Green-wood Modern Chapel. \nA reception will be held following the ceremony in the Green-Wood Cemetery Chapel sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project \nThe tentative timing of the event is from approximately 2:30pm – 5:30pm (including the procession and reception). \nThe Hello Girls\n \nThe Hello Girls were sworn into the U.S. Army Signal Corps as telephone switchboard operators in World War I playing a vital role in the ending of the war. This group of 223 women were the first female soldiers in the U.S. and served with valor operating the telephone systems for the U.S. Army. General John Pershing remarked that their service helped shorten the war by a year. \nWhen these brave women returned home\, they were told they had not served in the Army\, despite wearing uniforms\, taking Army oaths\, and previously being told\, “You’re in the Army now.” \nThe Hello Girls fought for more than 60 years to get their veterans status\, with more than 50 bills being introduced into Congress that did not pass. Finally\, in 1977\, bipartisan legislation passed and was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter. However\, most of the Hello Girls did not live to see the day of this victory; and those who did weren’t given veteran benefits or back paychecks. \nGrace Banker\n \nGraceD. Banker (October 25\, 1892 – December 17\, 1960) served during World War I (1917–1918) as chief operator of mobile for the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. She led thirty-three women telephone operators known popularly as Hello Girls. They were deployed to France to operate telephone switch boards at the war front in Paris\, and at Chaumont\, Haute-Marne. They also operated the telephone switch boards at First Army headquarters at Ligny-en-Barrois\, about 5 miles (8.0 km) to the south of Saint-Mihiel\, and later during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. After her return to civilian life\, Banker and her team members were treated as citizen volunteers and initially not given recognition as members of the military. In 1919\, Banker was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for her services with the First Army headquarters during the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. \n\n\nAmerica’s Forgotten Veterans: The Hello Girls of World War I Are Still Being Left Behind \n\n\n \n\n\nFor 60 years the Hello Girls fought for veterans status \n\n \nKey Participants:   \n\n\n\nCarolyn Timbie (Grace Banker’s granddaughter)\nOther Banker descendants \nOther Hello Girl descendants\nNY State Dept of Veteran Services Representative\nNYC Dept of Veteran Services Representative\nDan Dayton\, Doughboy Foundation\nLiving Historians/Re-Enactors\n\n\n\nThe ceremony is free and open to the public. \nSchedule of EventsGreeting by MC – Linda JantzenPresentation of ColorsNational AnthemWelcome to Green-Wood CemeteryRemarks by Carolyn TimbieRemarks by Army Representative – See aboveMusical Performance\nRemarks by VA Representative \nRemarks by Doughboy Fondation Rep – Dan DaytonRemarks by Representative GoldmanUnveiling of Marker by Carolyn Timbie + other descendantsAward of Victory Medal – recognition!Presentation of WreathsBenedictionRifle saluteTapsYour support for the Doughboy Foundation will help fund our mission in perpetuity\, inspiring future generations of visitors and forever honoring our World War I veterans and all U.S. servicemen and women.
